Seven Ways to Overcome Loneliness

In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, issued an advisory on the "Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community," highlighting the importance of addressing social disconnection and loneliness. Health concerns and other impacts caused by loneliness are increasingly being considered as an epidemic, and governmental responses include community-building initiatives, mental health support, and policies that foster social interaction. There are multiple causes for the higher incidence of loneliness, including the fallout from the pandemic, more dependency on social media and other virtual interactions, remote working, and our aging population. Seniors are especially vulnerable as social opportunities dwindle with mobility challenges and other health issues.

There are multiple mental, physical, and behavioral health concerns surrounding loneliness. Addressing the causes is not only critical for improving mental health but also for preventing and managing a wide range of physical health problems as well. Having an awareness of the situation and taking a proactive approach to combating loneliness for yourself or a loved one is an excellent first step.

1. Strengthen Connections: If you find yourself more isolated than usual, rekindle old connections with friends or family. Any communication, whether through phone calls, texts, or video chats, can help maintain and build stronger relationships.

2. Lifestyle: Eat a healthy diet, get enough sleep, and avoid alcohol and other substances that can negatively impact your mental health.

3. Exercise: Besides the physical health benefits associated with exercise, studies have shown that physical activity boosts a person's mood and reduces feelings of loneliness. Exercise does not have to involve rigorous workouts at a gym to be beneficial; a daily walk or a stretching routine can be just as effective for gaining mood-altering benefits.

4. Learn Something New: Take a class, enroll in a workshop, or learn something new. Learning is a lifelong experience. Stepping out of your comfort zone is a great way to meet new people with similar interests.

5. Pets: Although caring for a pet can be a big responsibility, the rewards for someone living alone can be tremendous. Pets are excellent companions and can substantially reduce feelings of loneliness. Pets can also encourage people to be more active and engaged with the world around them.

6. Mindfulness: Become aware and pay attention to the present moment without judgment. Pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and environment. Focus on the here and now rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Practicing mindfulness in your daily routine can give you a greater sense of calm and overall well-being.

7. Volunteering: "It is one of the beautiful compensations in this life that no one can sincerely try to help another without helping himself." – Ralf Waldo Emerson

If you are able, volunteering for a cause that you are passionate about can provide a sense of purpose in your life and help you meet others who share your passion.
