Safeguard Your Vision

WRITTEN BY: TAYLOR AUSTIN

Diabetes is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide, and one of its most serious complications is diabetic retinopathy—a leading cause of blindness in adults. For individuals living with diabetes, managing their health is critical, not only to control blood sugar levels but also to prevent life-altering complications like vision loss. At Your Health, we are committed to helping our diabetic patients maintain their health and independence through early detection and intervention. One of the ways we’re achieving this is by incorporating Retina View Cameras into our patient care.

The Power of Early Detection

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that often goes unnoticed until it’s too late. It occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the retina, leading to vision impairment and, eventually, blindness if left untreated. The key to preventing or slowing the progression of this condition lies in early detection, which is why regular eye screenings are crucial for diabetic patients.

Your Health has made this process easier and more accessible by using Retina View Cameras. These specialized cameras allow us to take high-quality retina images without dilation, making the screening process quick, painless, and convenient.

How the Retina View Camera Process Works

The process of using a Retina View Camera is straightforward and efficient:

  1. Taking the Pictures: During a patient’s appointment, our trained healthcare professionals take detailed images of the retina using the Retina View Camera. This process takes about ten minutes and does not require eye dilation, making it painless and hassle-free.

  2. Sending the Images: Once captured, they are securely sent to a contracted ophthalmologist for review. This partnership allows us to leverage expert analysis without requiring the patient to visit a specialist.

  3. Receiving Results: Within 48 hours, we receive the results from the ophthalmologist, which are then added to the patient’s medical chart along with the diagnosis. This rapid turnaround time ensures that any potential issues are identified quickly.

  4. Annual Screenings: We encourage all our diabetic patients to undergo this screening once a year. Regular monitoring is essential for early detection, and this convenient option makes it easier for patients to stay on top of their health.

What Happens If Retinopathy is Detected?

If a patient is diagnosed with retinopathy, we take immediate action. The patient is referred to an ophthalmologist for further evaluation and treatment. Additionally, we involve our endocrinology team to help the patient manage their diabetes more effectively. By addressing both the eye condition and the underlying diabetes management, we aim to slow the progression of retinopathy and help the patient maintain their vision and independence.

Protecting Independence Through Prevention

Vision is a critical component of independence, especially for those managing a chronic condition like diabetes. By incorporating Retina View Cameras into our care process, Your Health is not only helping to prevent blindness but also empowering our patients to maintain their quality of life. Early detection and timely intervention can make all the difference in preserving vision and ensuring that our patients can continue to live independently.

Our Impact So Far

Since integrating Retina View Cameras into our patient care, Your Health has conducted approximately 450 eye exams company-wide this year alone. The results have been significant—of our diabetic patients, we have identified retinopathy in about 1 in 5 individuals who would not have been diagnosed without these screenings. This early detection has allowed us to intervene sooner, offering patients the best chance at preserving their sight.

Convenience and Peace of Mind

One of the most significant advantages of using Retina View Cameras is its convenience to our patients. With 12 cameras deployed across the state, we can bring this essential screening directly to the patient’s home. The process is simple, non-invasive, and requires no medications. For our patients, this means peace of mind, knowing that their eye health is being closely monitored without the need for additional appointments or travel.

At Your Health, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive care that addresses all aspects of our patients’ well-being. By incorporating Retina View Cameras into our diabetic care program, we are taking proactive steps to prevent blindness and improve the overall health outcomes for our patients. This innovative approach not only helps in the early detection of diabetic retinopathy but also supports our patients in maintaining their independence and quality of life. If you or a loved one has diabetes, we encourage you to schedule your annual eye screening today—because when it comes to your vision, early detection is critical.
